New Music Friday: Slow Music, Screamy Folk-Punk

Aug. 28 releases include Mastodon, Sarah Davachi, RUEN, Generacion Suicida, Miscreance

A red and yellow zinnia among purple zinnias.

Missed y'all! I was on vacation in Asheville last week to visit the folks, go apple and flower pickin' and have a beer down by the river at Zillicoah, which is my favorite brewery besides Leveller in a town full of 'em.

Stream the Viking's Choice Guide to New Music Friday mixtape (tracks 1-5 are from the albums reviewed, the rest are singles released within the last week). Follow me on Bandcamp and check out previous mixes via Buy Music Club.

Mastodon, Marrow Deep

Grief can't help but steer the metal band's best album since the first four. But in sharper riffs, deeply felt melodies and twisty tangents that always find a home, there's a gripping sense of life and living.

Sarah Davachi, The Will of Tongues

Slow music to slow your sense of self. Behold, 2 hours and 20 minutes of strings, woodwinds, pipe organ and voice that shift like grass in the wind. Beautiful and patient, yet full of grandeur.

RUEN, The Tragedy of the Commons

Crusty, anarcho folk-punk from Lisbon, Portugal, that deftly weaves fiddle and banjo into its chaotic shred. Emotionally and physically heaving music that mourns what we steal from each other, yet screams for brighter days. I am ready to make this album my entire personality. FFO: Panopticon, Circle Takes the Square, Fall of Efrafa.

RUENThe Tragedy of the Commons

Generacion Suicida, Hombre Nuevo

A worn leather jacket and a pack of clove cigarettes in album form. Punk's still at the root of the South Central LA band, but the romantic melodies are dustier and the atmosphere positively gothic.

Miscreance, Reminiscence

How can technical death/thrash metal fripp-frappery this fancy still sound this scrappy? There's a crushed tallboy glee to these complex compositions that expand the universe set in place by Death, Cynic and Atheist. Plus, bongos!
