New Music Friday: Gossamer Grooves, Blown-Out Bliss
The Viking's Choice Guide to May 15 releases includes the Jeff Parker ETA IVtet, Touch Girl Apple Blossom and Khun Narin.

What I thought was a sleepy day for new releases ended up a surprising one! Six very different albums for y'all today, with sticky note-length reviews and links to listen.
Elsewhere, on NPR's All Songs Considered, I shared an unreleased track by Black Swan Network (Will Cullen Hart of Olivia Tremor Control), Boards of Canada's unexpected gothic ambiance and some real rock music by Starflyer 59.
Jeff Parker ETA IVtet, Happy Today
Two side-long improvisations from these masters of imperceptible shifts in sound. As you drift through the music, the audience (more audible on these recordings) whoops and hollers when the gossamer groove gets stanky.
Touch Girl Apple Blossom, Graceful
This young twee-pop band is steeped in K Records 7"s with an album on K. The influences are undeniable (Tiger Trap, Apples in Stereo, Go-Betweens), but the puckish energy is charming and fresh.
Khun Narin, III
Has it really been a decade since the last LP by these Thai psych travelers? This one was recorded in a real studio, but the blown-out bliss outs remain. Joyous, trance-inducing jams.
Magda Mayas, Chant
Prepared piano for the hours of dusk, when the day has worn heavy, but the night still seems full of possibility. In long chords and longer silences, these pieces let us sit in the rustle and crackle of sustain.
Cocanha, Flame Folclòre
Buzzing, boisterous folk music that feels ALIVE. Like other folk-reviving duos (see: Ibeyi, Tarta Relena), they tap into the ancients to discover the future of Occitan traditions. Such a cool record!
i.o, The Beatniks Couldn't Save the Word
Skramz jazz? Free-improv talkmo? No, they call this freemo! Absolutely frenetic drum clatter propels slightly-overdriven guitar twinkle and spoken word scramble. Can replace a strong cup of pu-erh in the morning.
